Chapters 8-12

Chapters 8-10

1. Annemarie figures out that there is no Great-Aunt Birte and no funeral.  Why did Uncle Henrik and Mama lie to Annemarie about Great-Aunt Birte? (Think about this carefully since this is ONE of the MAJOR THEMES of the BOOK!)

2. Mama stopped the German officer from opening the casket by telling him her Great-Aunt Birte died of a contagious disease typhus. What does this tell you about her character?

3. As a reader, you find out more about Peter in these chapters.  What new thing(s) have you learned about Peter, use text evidence to support your ideas.

Chapters 11 and 12

1. Reread pages 93-94 and answer the following question. The last statement in this chapter says, "...they had not left everything behind." What do you think the author is trying to say by this statement?

2. The author leaves us in suspense at the end of Chapter 12. What is the "cliffhanger" at the end of the chapter?

  1. They did this so the Nazi’s didn’t try doing anything about it, and acted like it was her. Also when they went to Sweden, they used it for clothes and blankets.
This tells me that Mama is very brave, because lying to a German officer can get your life in risk, if there isn’t a dead body and just clothes and blankets.
He is the person who secretly delivered newspapers, but after that they have to tear it up. Jews are treated unfairly. He has been caring by helping people, and making sure the Nazi’s do not try finding them while they sneak off to Sweden.
In my opinion, I believe that this means that they are all scared of going to Sweden, and believe that they might get caught, but when they get there they know every things going to be all right.
It was that her mother who was lying dead, and it left suspense because it was confusing to understand on the way it happened.

    1. I think that Annemarie figures that there is no great Aunt Birte because in the book it says that her mother use to always tell her stories of her relatives and there was never one about Great Aunt Birte. She knows this because her mother use to tell her ALL of the stories about her relatives.
    2. When Mama stopped the soldier from opening the casket by telling them that she had died by Typhus this shows me that she is very brave to stand up to the soldiers and actually speak and tell them not to open the casket. Also, from “Letters From Rifka” I think it says that Typhus is contagious and the soldiers probably don’t want to see her.
    3. I have learned that Peter is very loyal to the Johansen’s because even when Lise died he still acted like they were his family. Without Peter they probably would not have completed the quest to get some of the Jew’s to Sweden. I also have learned that Peter is very brave to risk his life for the Johansen’s one reason is that he sells an illegal newspaper to them to inform them on what is happening.
    1. When it say’s “ they had not left everything behind.” I think that the author is trying to say there that there was still hope there were still good times to come and to stay positive when hard times are with you.
    2. I think that the “cliffhanger” at the end of chapter twelve was whether or not the Jews like the Rosen’s and the other family would make it to Sweden. Also, if any body would get caught by the soldiers and even get killed.

  3. When they said they had not left everything behind they were saying that when they saw the table and Sabbath candles they saw everything was exactly as they left it.

They left us in suspense because Annmarie could not see so we did not know what the dark object was.

  4. 1.) Uncle hendric tells Ammarie that aunt birty died because she really didn’t die there is no aunt birty .He only told her that because they didn’t want to know about much of their plain so they come up with the solution of telling the kids that they had an aunt named aunt birte but when they had the funeral what was in the casket was sweatshirts and jackets because they were trying to get the Thompsons to a different country so they went killed by the Germans so they had to try and get them out of the country before they were caught.
2.) That she is vary sneaky and she is vary convincing for instance she made the German soulges not open the cascade because the mom convinced. Also she is sneak because she and a couple of other people are trying to help other people have better lives so they cannot live the life of their parents.
3.) Well peter is not just a messenger he also helps people have better lives on page 89 usually peter calls the mom by her last name but he called her by her first name at the meeting which was different from what he really says. Also he said that he was not going to see them for a while because he has more people to help people.

  5. 1.Uncle Henrik and Mama lied to Annemarie because the less she knows the better. If Annemarie knew why they were really doing this when a solider asked her something about what was happening she could answer truthfully. For instance if a soldier asked her where the Rosens’ were she could answer truthfully. If she did know and had to lie to a soldier she could stumble on her words and get caught.

    2. Mama stopping the German from opening the casket because of health shows that Mama is quick to think of an excuse or sharp. For instance on page 64 Mama tries to stop or at least stall the soldier from entering her children’s room by saying, ”Please, don’t waken the little ones. No need to frighten the little ones”. Thinking the guards would not enter.

    3. One new thing I have learned about Peter is that Peter is helping the Rosens’ and others try to escape. Another thing we have learned is that Peter has been associated with Uncle Henrik before because it says on page 114 that behind Uncle Henrik stood Peter.

    1. I think the author is saying that the Jews will hold their heads up high even if they feel threatened or scared.

    2. I believe the cliffhanger is the author making you believe the mother is dead.

  6. #1. I think that Uncle Henrik and Mama lied to Annemarie about Great-Aunt Birte because the more the know about what is going on the harder it is to lie.
#2. This tells me about Mama's character that she is brave and she cares more about other people's safety than hers. It also tells me that she is protective.
#3. Some new things that I have learned about Peter is he is trying to help the Rosens and lots of other people escape

    Chapters 11 and 12
#1. I think the author is trying to say by this statement "...they had not left everything behind." is they didn't loose they're family or the Rosens when the Nazis came.
#2. The "cliffhanger" at the end of the chapter was was when Mama was lying on the ground and they did not know if she died or if she was hurt.
