Chapters 15, 16 & 17

1. In what way had the Johansons, Peter and Uncle Henrik act as bodyguards for the Jews?

2. How did Annelise (Annemarie's older sister) really die?  What does this tell us about her character?

3 In the letter Peter sends before he is killed by the Nazi's he says he is not afraid of death.  Why do you think he writes this?

  1. Chapter 15, 16, and 17:
The Johanson’s, Peter and Uncle Henrik was by putting their lives in risk by hiding Ellen in their house. The could be caught because the Nazi soldiers come and check the house every night and they could possibly find Ellen. Back then, in the 1900’s Jews were treated very poorly and the people felt the need to punish them. Now days, Jews are aloud to walk around without being scared that the Nazi german’s or anyone would come to hurt the family. The Johanson’s, Peter and Uncle Henrik are very brave people for doing this. It was scary when someone hid a Jew inside of their house because not only the Jew might get killed, but the people who were hiding the Jew would. Most of the time Jews would get sent to go to internment camp’s. They treat people very badly there. This is a connection to Japanese internment camps, they would send them there because they are Japanese. Some people may think why the Jew’s just can’t change their religion, but it’s not as easy as it seems. Jews often have blond hair.
Annelise died because she was shot by one of the Nazi’s. Earlier in the book her mom told her to be an air head, which means to act like you don’t know what’s going on around you. She was most likely acting like an airhead and got a little to overboard. How Annelise acted like a airhead was just acting like the German Nazi’s were just normal average every day people. The Nazi’s wanted respect and to be treated like a master. So the Nazi’s felt they should shoot her. Since they are such rude they felt the need to shoot her and other people. Their momma’s most likely gave them the same advice, and they went a little to overboard as well as Annelise.
In my opinion, Peter said this because he was sick and tired of being treated poorly. He was getting to much stress. He didn’t want to go through the pain because he just wanted to live freely and not have a Nazi German on the side of the block every time you turn a corner. He secretly delivered newspapers to people, and possibly felt guilty. Also, he may have been a really tough person and felt he could fight it out. These are my few opinions on why I think he said this.
    Afterward
They tricked the people and the dogs by putting a casket (someone who dies goes into) in the boat and say they have a funeral to go to. In the casket the people escaping really put in blankets and coats because it was very cold there. The German Nazi’s most likely wouldn’t stick their head inside to see a body.
Christian X surrendered to the Nazi’s because the country was small and undefended, with no army of any size. This is the exact reason that Papa explained to Annemarie. The afterward just gives a little history about the book and the time period. It tells / relates to what the author Lois Lowry wrote in the book, other than the fact that it is a little more explanated in the book than it is in the book itself without the afterward.
The Danish Navy sank their own ships because they thought the German’s were going to steal their ships, so they wanted to get it over with. This happened in August of 1943 in Denmark.

    1. The Johansen’s, Uncle Henrick, and Peter all act like bodyguards for the Jews when they all had planned a secret excape for the Jews in Uncle Henrick’s boat so that the Jews could go across the sea to Sweden. They did this because they did not want the Jews to concentration camps.

    2. Annelise died because she was at a meeting (a secret meeting) and they were discussing a plan to make the Nazis leave and not control their country. Then the Nazis came and people were running everywhere and there was a car with Nazis soldiers in it and they ran her over (she was run over by a car and killed).

    3. I think Peter wrote that letter and said that he was not afraid of death because he wanted them to see how loyal a friend he was and how he was so brave and would risk his life for them and his country. I think that he died because he wanted his country to be free and the Nazis to leave his county and never to come back.

    4. Uncle Henrick and the fisherman who were sneaking the Jews to Sweden had there boat fixed and a secret room under the boats where the Jews would go and wait till they were in Sweden. Also, Peter and some other people had invented a spray that when the dogs sniffed it the dogs no longer could smell the humans and the Nazis soldiers would fail at trying to find the Jews.

    5. I think that King Christain X surrendered to the Nazis because he knew that if they were to fight back they would lose because the Nazis out numbered them and they were better fighters.

    6. The Danish Navy sank their own ships because as the German’s approached to take over the ships for their own use and I guess that the Danes did not want the German’s to use their boats and ships.

  3. 1.) hey acted like body gards because the jews are like family to them and u would do anything for family to make shure there all safe u would do any thing for that person with is why they act like body gards so they can protect the jews from thsogers that are trying to kill them.
2.) I think he knows that he is going to die because he says that he is not afraid of death witch shows that he knows he is going to die by teling the reader that he is going to die.

1.The Johansens, Peter and Uncle Henrik has acted as bodyguards from having to keep the soldiers away from the Jews. Also the tricks or schemes they have had to use to get the guards to leave.

    2. Lise died from being part of the Resistance. Lise was running and a military car had run her over.

    3. In my opinion, Peter wrote this because of all he has done for his country. Also because of all he’s going through and all he’s been through he has had enough.

    AFTERWORD:

4.Danish fisherman used handkerchiefs to trick the soldiers and their dogs. The handkerchief had the scent of dried rabbits blood so it would temporarily numb their sense of smell.

    5. King Christian X surrendered to Germany because of how small the country and military was. Denmark did not stand a chance against the Germans.

    6. The Danish Navy sunk their ships so that Germans wouldn’t have an even bigger advantage to take over. If they had even more ships Germans could take over more countries.

  5. A way they all were bodyguards to the jews because they took them to a lake house were they would be safe.
there is no older sister. peter said that because he thinks he's brave.

To sneak the jews onto the boat they distracted them well thay snuck them on the boat.

He surrendered because they destroyed most of the city and to big of an army for them to fight off.

The Danish navy sunk there own ship because they wanted to confuse the Germans.
