Chapters 13 and 14

1. What is the significance of the "loose" step at Uncle Henrik's house? How did Lois Lowry use the author craft foreshadowing to hint at the importance of the step?

2. How does Annemarie's running to Uncle Henrick's boat similar to the famous children's story, "Little Red Riding Hood"?

3. Why does Annemarie's mother tell her if she is stopped on the path by Nazi soldiers that she should act as a "airheaded" child? In your opinion, who should Annemarie try to imitate?

  1. The author showed that Mr. Rosen’s fall was important, because it was the secret envelope. She had to give it to Uncle Henrik.
It was because she was running to get get something to her Uncle, but in the little red riding hood she had to give something to her Grandma.
She means this because it was like the less you know the better it is.

    1. Lois Lowery used the author craft foreshadowing to hint at the importance of the “loose” step in Uncle Henrick’s house because in the book it says “Her foot caught on the loose step and she faltered for moment, righting herself, then dashed across the ground where her mother lay.” The significance of the loose step in Uncle Henrick’s house is that the book was foreshadowing that her mother was wooded because Annemarie stumble and they both did. Also, it might have been foreshadowing that something bad was going to happen like when Mr. Rosen dropped the package cause he stumbled on the step that loose step that Annemarie stumbled on might have be foreshadowing that there was something bad to happen (the package still being there).

    2. Annemarie’s running into Uncle Henrick’s boat was similar to Little Red Riding Hood because Annemarie and Little Red Riding Hood are both running or fearing something. Annemarie was running from the soldiers and Little Red Riding Hood was running from the wolf. Also, Annemarie just was running to the boat not knowing what was going to happen and Little Red Riding Hood just ran into her grandmothers house.

    3. Annemarie’s mother told Annemarie if she is stopped by the Nazis soldiers to act like an “airhead” child. In my opinion this is similar to Kristi because Kristi does not know a lot on what is happening and usually when ever she talks or speaks she is not on the topic like on the train when the Nazis soldiers came they asked if it was any one’s new year and Kristi just started talking about how she is going to visit her Uncle Henrick.

  3. 1. The significance of the "loose" step at Uncle Henrik's house is that it gave Annemarie an idea of how her mother hurt her leg.

    2. It is similar by when Annemarie was leaving the house with a basket of food like in " Little Red Riding Hood". But when she was walking she was not going to grandmas house she is going to Uncle Henrik's boat and she's not watching out for the big bad wolf she looks for the German soldiers( Nazis).

    3. The mother tells her to act as an airhead because they do not want to look suspicious so Annemarie acted as Kirsti.

  4. 1.) the auther used the step as a since the corrector trait would be foreshadowing because if you put something in early in the book it sometimes comes back later in the story
2.) I think that the book little red riding hood is simaler anmery running because when annmere runs to the uncles boat that is related because she runs to her grandmothers house with her basket of food and she has the lunch that she has to give the uncle.
3.) because if the solgers find her they will find out she is a jew so she has to act not like herself. If theyb find her it might change the plain a bit.

3.The Mother tells her to act like an airhead because they do not want to look suspicious so Annmerie acts like Keisti

  6. #1. The significance of the "loose" step at Uncle Henrik's house is that when Mr. Rozen tripped over the step the important packet fell out but she did not know then Annemarie tripped in that same spot and found the packet the brought it to Uncle Henrick. Lois Lowry use the author craft foreshadowing by telling us about the loose step before the event happened.
#2. Annemarie's running to Uncle Henrick's boat was similar to the famous children's story, "Little Red Riding Hood" because Annemarie was Little Red Riding Hood running away from the wolf ( Nazis) bringing the basket of goods to grandma ( Uncle Henrik) which he needed.

#3. Annemarie's mother told her if she is stopped on the path by Nazi soldiers that she should act as a "airheaded" child because the Nazis will not be suspicious if she acts like she knows nothing. In my opinion, I think that Annemarie should try to imitate Kristi because she does not know anything about the Nazis. LW#22
