Chapters 6, 7, 8 & 9

1. Why did Papa speak to Uncle Henrik on the phone in code?

2. Describe the scene on the train with Mrs. Johansen and the girls. How did the author create suspense?

3. Why did Uncle Henrik and Mama lie to Annemarie about Great-Aunt Birte? (Think about this carefully since this is ONE of the MAJOR THEMES of the BOOK!)

  1. Papa was talking to Uncle Henrik in code because they did not want to scare Ellen about the beach house they were going to for her protection because she is a Jew
The scene on the train has suspense because there was a Nazi on the train and Ellen was on the train with her.
They lied to Annemari because they thought if they lied to her they would see if she was brave orn

  2. 1). Papa speaks to uncle Henrik over the phone in code because if a German hakes into the phone and listens to the conversation. For example when say the uncle says that the Jonansens left town but escaped to Sweetened then the German would go and look for them and they could put more Jews in danger.
2). When the Johandsons say that they have to leave because the apartment is already empty and the dad isn’t at work so they have to leave otherwise they are going to hurt the other people that are working with them. Also they leave behind their daughter because she is too young but the mom wants the family to stick together but sadly they can’t.
3). they lied to Annemarie because she doesn’t really need to know about the plain because say she runs into a guard and she stutters when the guard asks he something then she will give the entire plain away. Also when the mom and uncle told the lie about the aunt they met one night to pretend to do a service and pay tribute to the pretend dead aunt but what was really in the coffin was clothing because it was cold on the ship.

  3. 1. Papa spoke to Uncle Henrik in code because they didn’t want the Nazi’s to hear what the conversation was, because they will hear that they are trying to escape to go to Sweden. That is why they speak in code.
    2. The train scene about Mrs. Johansen and the girls was about how when they got on the train they were trying to take Ellen and it was was her New Year, because she is Jewish. They all thought Kirsti was going to say it’s Ellen’s New Year that would be bad because the Nazi’s do not like the Jews. Instead, Kirsti was talking about her sneakers. The author created suspense when the family couldn’t be together on the New Year, and Ellen had to go with a different family. I am guessing because they might be able to show that she is Jewish. Also, her parents went to Sweden later in the book, and she didn’t know where her family was in this case. They sadly weren’t together as a family on the New Year for the family of Jews.
    3. In my opinion, I believe Uncle Henrik and Mama didn’t tell Annemarie about the death because they knew that the less you know the better it is. And if they explain to Annemarie about the death it could be bad. When they had to go to Sweden they brought a casket filled with clothes and blankets because they didn’t wasn’t the Nazi’s to take them away. The clothes is because it gets very cold in Sweden, and is by the Arctic Ocean.

    1) Papa wanted to speak to Uncle Henrik because he wanted to tell him that the children and the mom are coming to visit him because they need to protect Ellen from the Germans taking her away.
    2) The author created suspense by making the soldier think it’s a new year because Kirsti can’t tell what’s going on because the soldiers had been there since she was a baby so she thinks they are just random people and she does not know there is a war going on.

    3) They lied to Annemarie because they wanted to know if she was brave. Because in the book it says, it is much easier to be brave if you do not know everything.

    1. Papa speaks to Uncle Henrik in code on the phone because I think papa does not want any soldiers to maybe here them talking and they need to keep it a secret. If there was a soldier right outside their door and they heard what papa really said they would find out they were trying to sneak the Jews. But, since they said “ Is the weather good for fishing” the soldiers would think that he just asked if the weather was good for fishing.

    2. The author said that the train ride north along the Danish coast was very beautiful. “There were lovely homes along the seaside, the small farms and villages.”

    3. Uncle Henrik and Mama lied to Annamarie because I think they did not want her to get worried and Ellen worried also maybe if the soldiers came they would ask what it is and then the soldiers would know that they were hiding something from them that they needed to know. ( If they had any Jews).
