Chapters 1 & 2

1. Why does Mrs. Rosen advise Annemarie with the following words of wisdom, "It is important to be part of the crowd, always. Be one of many. Be sure that they never have reason to remember your face." (pp. 8-9)

2. What is life like in Copenhagen, Denmark under German occupation? Give examples from the book.

3.  Why does the younger Kristi not show the same level as respect and fear of the soldiers as the older girls, Annemarie and Ellen do?

4.  How does the author describe the soldiers on the streets of Copenhagen?

5. Go back and reread parts of Chapter 1 and find 3 new vocabulary words.  Look up the words and explain how they are being used in the book.

  1. 1Mrs. Rosen said that because she doesn’t want her to be noticed by the Nazi German guards.
2While the German Nazi’s are in war they have a shortage of food. It said this when Kristi asked if they could make cupcakes, the mom said they don’t have butter or sugar because of the war. Another example is that they have Nazi Soldiers on every corner.
3Annemarie and Ellen got caught playing in the street, and got caught by the German soldiers. Kristi wasn’t caught for anything bad. Also, Kristi is a little younger and might not know what is really going on.
4It says that one soldier was on a corner with a helmet on and his face was not showing any emotion. Also, one soldier started talking to the girls and had a little conversation with them.
5Halte-when a soldier says no. Annmarie was laughing and the soldier saw her and said halte. Impassive-not showing emotion. Explaining what the soldiers are like. Scold-grumbles constantly. When Annmarie did something bad her mom would probably scold at her. DW#21

    1. Mrs. Rosen said, "it is very important to be one of the crowd, always. Be one of many. Be sure that they never have a reason to remember your face." She said that because they don't want the guards to remember their faces because if hey do remember their faces then they could be in very big trouble.

    2. Life living with the germans in Copenhagen, Denmark is like, they cant eat butter because the Germans took it from them and every where they go there are German solders there. Also, lots of shops that Jews own are going out of business. times are very hard in Copenhagen, Denmark.

    3. Kristi does not show the same level of appreciation and fear when the solders stop them because Kristi is to little to know what is going on and what those solders can do to them if they don't do what they ask them to do.

    4. The author describes the solders as very mean and cruel because in the book it says that means two sets of cold ark eyes.

    5. Three new vocabulary words I learned in chapter 1 are, 1. sabotage that means, deliberate damage of equipment, materials underhand interference with production or work, as by employees during a trade dispute. My book use's it when it says "But Annamarie heard Mama and Papa talk, sometimes at night, about the news of sabotage
against the Nazis." 2. industrial this means technology in big companies. In my book this is used when it says " The Nazis have bombs hidden and exploded in the factories that produced war materials and industrial railroad lines damaged so that the goods couldn't be transported." 3. impassive this means showing or feeling no emotion; unmoved. This word is used in the book when it says " She glanced through the window, down the street corner where the solders stood, their faces impassive beneath the metal helmets."

  3. Mrs.Rosen wants Annemarie to promise that because when she sees the Nazis they will Know they are Jews because they have every Jew on a list.
Life for Jews in Denmark is hard because the Nazis hate Jews first of all and they take them away and put them in interment camps.
Kristi doesn't respect them because she is probably mad because they came and started taking control of everything.
The author describes the soldiers as Mean and cruel because they came in took all the jews.
the three vocab words are rucksack, exasperated, and stocky.

  4. 1)Mrs. Rosen does not want Annemarie's face to be shown because when the German soldier (Nazis) said that Kristi looks like his daughter that might mean trouble later in the story. It's easier to stay out of trouble when you blend in.

    2) If I was Annemarie in the story I would be frightened of all the German solders (Nazis) in all the corners of Copenhagen because when Annemarie was running the German soldier stopped her and she would not know what he would do next.

    3) Kristi does not show the same level as fear because the soldiers have been there as long as she can remember. She thinks its just normal for them to be there. As for Annemarie and Ellen the soldiers got there when they were old enough to remember. They also know to be afraid of them.

    4) The author described the soldiers as frightening and they are always watching you. Another reason they are frightening and Annmarie knows to do anything they say. They have helmets shiny helmets and rifles.

    5) Three vocabulary words are rucksack, halte, and rifle.

  6. 1].Mrs. Rosen said that because in chapter 1 it says that when they were running to get home from school they ran into a solver and the reson she says that is because they don’t want to remmber the faces. Who you are so they don’t remmber who they are so it would be easier to travel in a group than bye yourselfe.
2] It is very intimidating because the solders took some of the supplied for themselves and didn’t leave allot for the town they took it from for example when she asks for a cupcake on page 6 it says that she wants a cupcake with pink frosting so that shows that they are not poor just being occupited witch I think that is cind of mean.
3[ the reson why the little irldosnt shown as much respect as the other girls is because she is only 5 and doesn’t know who and why they were there and she grew up with them being there but her siser has lived with out the solgers at every corner.
4[ the solgers are like watchers over the town like a halk watching its pray or like a sheep waching overits flock but only the shepherd is vichus and has a wepoun.

  8. 1. Mrs. Rosen said this because she does not want Annemarie's face to be remembered by the German soldiers. If they do they might attack her.
    2. Life living in Copenhagen, Denmark under German occupation is not easy. For example, it said in the book that Jews cannot eat butter or cupcakes because the German soldiers take the butter and sugar for themselves. Another example is the German soldiers are closing down shops owned by the Jews.
    3. Kristi does not show the same level as respect and fear of the soldiers as the older girls, Annemarie and Ellen do because she was born around the soldiers and she doesn't know how life was before the soldiers came. Also she is too young to understand why the soldiers are there.
    4. The author describes the soldiers on the streets of Copenhagen as being miserable and frightening. For example it says in the text that both soldiers had a set of cold dark eyes.
    5. One new vocabulary word that I learned in chapter one was rucksack. It said in the book that Annemarie had a rucksack. It is referred today as a backpack. Another word that I learned from this chapter was rifle. It is an older style of a gun. The soldiers carried these. One more word that I learned was halte. Halte is a Danish word for stop. This word was used in the book when the soldiers told the three girls to halte.
